Weekend in the Country at Gaia Sagrada

Enjoy the Mountains Near Cuenca in Llayzhatan!

Weekend In The Country

If you have wanted to see Gaia Sagrada Eco-Community & Retreat Center, this is the perfect opportunity for a small cost. A weekend trip into the country is only 45-50 minutes away from Cuenca, Ecuador.
Come to the country for a weekend of relaxation, enjoyment and peace. Gaia Sagrada offers you the opportunity to enjoy easy hiking, hammocks, great vegetarian meals, and great company. This is your chance to get out of the city for the weekend, take in the sunshine, nature, trees, birds, sit in the flower gardens, and just be yourself.

Saturday Campfire at Night

This is an old fashioned campfire night under the stars (protected from rain on the fireplace patio). This is a chance to hang out with others for music, sharing, marshmallows, s’mores, stories and just enjoying the country! Bring some marshmallows if you want to roast them, and bring your instruments if you would like to play music at the fire! Who knows what can happen on Campfire Night. Sometimes, if a telescope is available, we take turns gazing at the galaxies! Beer and wine can be purchased at these events (please do not bring your own, and no hard liquors).
If you live in Cuenca, this is a wonderful chance to get out of the city, walk around, enjoy nature, and be with your friends in a wonderful country atmosphere!

Casa Del Sol

In Casa del Sol (House of the Sun), you get two rooms! One room is below, and the upper room is a second floor loft that you can use for other things. It is actually a lot of space between the two rooms. Some people use the upper loft for doing yoga, sitting under the sunroof in the sun, writing, or as a living room.
Bathrooms are right outside the door, and lots of them so you never have to wait. Gardens and hammocks are right outside your door as well, so you never have an excuse for not relaxing!
8 rooms with a shared 4 stall bathroom outside the door
·  Each room has a good amount of space, both first floor and loft floor, like a mini apartment
·  Furnished: 1st floor – Twin-bed or full bed, dresser, bookshelf, lamp, desk, chairs
·  Upstairs in the loft, desk, chair and bookshelf
·  You have private use of both floors, room and loft room, with trap door to keep heat downstairs when needed
·  Bathrooms have ample space in each stall, total privacy while you do your business. If you don’t want to make a run at night to the bathrooms, just keep a bottle or bucket in your room and empty in the morning!
·  Shower-house for showers (or sauna/hot tub complex)

If you rent a single room monthly in Casa del Sol that has a bunk in it, we take the mattress on the top bunk out and then you have a flat storage area for all your stuff. Don’t forget, you have the second floor loft all to yourself as well!
Here are some more pictures of the Casa del Sol rooms, including pictures of the roomy lofts above each of the 8 rooms.

Gaia Sagrada Shower House

The water is always hot! We use on-demand water heating systems in order to conserve on fuel. Why heat water when it’s not being used? Hot water tanks are just silly! And to keep heating them all day when the hot water is not in use? Not smart!
We use propane gas to heat the water but our plan is to incorporate more and more of the passive solar heating methods as time goes on. We are still working on our prototypes right now to figure out which is the most efficient way to heat water without high tech solar equipment.
Our plan is to eventually have most of our showers using water heated by sunlight, with black tubes on the roof under glass enclosed boxes, with a tank at the top to collect the hot water as it is heated. We hope to have our first solar shower house done by mid 2014. In the meantime, we heat with gas and the showers are always strong and hot. No wimpy dribbles! Plenty of water and always super hot!
There is a lot of room in the shower areas, with a dressing area and the shower area separated by the curtain so none of your things get wet while you are showering. Enjoy!

Casa Tranquilo

These rooms are  do not have as much space as Casa del Sol rooms, but the advantage is a bathroom across the hall inside the house. If you do a mid-sleep run to the bathroom in the middle of the night, Casa Tranquilo might be your best choice!

  • 6 small private rooms in a house
  • Read and hang out in the living room if you want
  • Two toilets and sinks in the hall, shared
  • Shower-house for showers (or sauna/hot tub complex)
  • Furnished: dresser, bookshelf, twin bed (1½ plazas), desk, chair

About Cuenca, Ecuador

Cuenca is considered the #1 place to retire in South America by International Living, and from our experience we can see why! All the modern amenities are in the Ecuadorian cities, high speed internet, cell phones, clean water and food, it’s all here. It is very much like middle class America   in Cuenca.
Cuenca has a rich night life, many museums, as well as universities and a lot of cultural activities. Some refer to Cuenca as the cultural center of Ecuador because Cuenca is where all the artisans go. Cuenca is a little bit more expensive to live in than other cities in Ecuador.
Quito is the capital of Ecuador so all the   business and political affairs go on there. Guayaquil is a port city where  imports and exports happen, and might be considered the Los Angeles or Miami of Ecuador. Cuenca is the cultural center of Ecuador and very historical.
